Blue Ridge Abortion Fund

Belief

We believe funding abortion is an act of radical care and that all community members should have the agency and the resources to make their own decisions about their bodies and lives.

Vision

We envision a world where everyone receives supportive and compassionate abortion care in their community.

Mission

The Blue Ridge Abortion Fund provides community members with financial support, transportation, and lodging assistance for abortions. Through education and community outreach, we reduce stigma and increase awareness.

The Blue Ridge Abortion Fund has been here for 30 years, working to make access a reality for folks who need abortion care.

Headquartered in Central Virginia, Blue Ridge Abortion Fund has been serving individuals who need help paying for abortion care since 1989. Funding abortion is an act of radical care that affirms our belief that all community members should have the agency and the resources to make their own decisions about their bodies.

Our organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and part of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), a membership organization of over 76 funds across the United States.

Our History

Blue Ridge Abortion Fund’s origin story involves the county fair and a pickle jar put out by members of Charlottesville NOW to collect money to help a person pay for their abortion. The request came through a whisper network and for a long time that’s how it went: community gathering money when a person was in need. In 2009 Blue Ridge Abortion Fund was formed as an independent non-profit organization fully dedicated to funding abortions.

30 years after that pickle jar first circulated, Blue Ridge Abortion Fund supports more than 1000 callers a year through the generous support of community members, grants, foundations, and religious organizations.
